Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time – Rated 466/500!

Original mono mix produced by Brian Wilson, Stereo mix produced by Mark Linett and Alan Boyd

A musical legacy that began in Hawthorne, California and went on to conquer theworld. Analogue Productions presents the ultimate pressings of 14 essentialBeach Boys albums! Mastered by Kevin Gray, most from the original master tapes, now presented on Hybrid Stereo/Mono SACD, these are awesome recordings toexperience.

For the early part of the Beach Boys’ career, all of their singles were mixedand mastered and released only in the mono format. Hits were made on AM radio inmono. And the mono of those times worked well for Brian Wilson — famedco-founder, songwriter and arranger – who suffers from partial deafness.

The mono mixes were where Wilson paid intense attention, and the dedication paidoff!

Analogue Productions has taken 10 of the most classic, best-sounding BeachBoy titles ever and restored them to their mono glory!

Still, there’s no disputing that the close harmonies and one-of-a-kind rhythmsof hits like “Surfer Girl,” “In My Room,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” and more lendthemselves naturally to stereo. So Analogue Productions has your 2-channel needscovered with prime stereo mix versions as well.

The stereo editions of Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut DownVol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert wereall mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensiblyunder the group’s supervision.

“Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions — evidencesuggests that he trusted Chuck’s skills enough to let him prepare those mixes onhis own – but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereomasters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereoversions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol wouldprepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market,” says AlanBoyd, producer and Beach Boys’ archivist.

All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!,Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys’ Party, Pet Sounds and SmileySmile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.

The Beach Boys Today!, also known simply as Today!, is the eighth studio albumby the American rock group the Beach Boys, and their first of three 1965releases. Although few realized the significance of the album at the time,Today! marked a major transition point for the band; notably Brian Wilson’ssophisticated, orchestral approach. The tracks on the first half of Today!feature an electric guitar-rock oriented sound that contrasts the second halfconsisting of ballads, showing an increased mature lyrical depth that wouldforeshadow future efforts like Pet Sounds. The second side marks Wilson’scontinuing maturation as a recording artist; all the songs (sans comedy fillertrack “Bull Session”) showcase creatively developed vocal & instrumentalarrangements, complex Wall of Sound production, and lyrically introspectivesubject matter.

The Beach Boys Today! is one of the most acclaimed albums of the Beach Boys’career, making multiple ‘Best of’ lists. In 2020, the album was voted 466th onRolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”. In 2005,it was included in the musical reference book 1001 Albums You Must Hear BeforeYou Die.

The Today! stereo mix was created between 2005 and 2012 using the firstgeneration basic tracking session multitracks, synced with the overdubs thatwere later added on second and third generation masters, to create the firsttrue stereo mixes!

“Put simply, this is the Beach Boys at their mid-’60s prime. Ironically, theband’s greatest evolutionary leap was spurred by its leader, Brian Wilson, whodecided to drop out of the band’s live performances after a December 1964nervous breakdown to concentrate on honing the Beach Boys’ studio sound. WithWilson’s productions gaining a significant new depth and confidence (note theinnovative modulations on ‘Dance, Dance, Dance’), the first half of Today seemsa logical, upbeat step forward from its predecessors. But it’s the album’ssecond act that steals the show, setting the stage for the triumph of PetSounds. Indeed, it’s easy to imagine gorgeous, introspective tracks such as’Please Let Me Wonder,’ ‘She Knows Me Too Well,’ and ‘In the Back of My Mind’intertwined with the best of Sounds.” -Amazon.com
